Also known as Clichy-la-Garenne, the city of Clichy is a commune bordering on Paris. Born of a Gallo-Roman villa, the village has gradually expanded while maintaining its authentic character. A forested region up to the Middle Ages, it was from this period that the name of the town was transformed into Clichy-la-Garenne in reference to the many royal hunting parties that took place there.
The revolution marked a shift in the city's economic activities. The latter saw the rise of laundresses and washerwomen. The famous "Goulue" of the Moulin Rouge was one of the washerwomen of Clichy. However, Clichy has not lost its character of "village" and intends to keep it between modernity and traditions.
City often occupied by the Kings for their hunting party or even to establish their neighborhood, Clichy has kept many traces of history. It is the oldest church in the city, to be seen absolutely. The Town Hall of offers an interesting architecture. The House of the People built between and presents a modern design for the time and stands as a forerunner of contemporary architecture.
Classified as Historical Monuments, it still houses today the covered market. Dating from , these buildings successively housed the warehouses, the garment factories and finally the offices. The Beaujon Hospital, built in , marked the spirit with its atypical architecture which earned it the nickname of a skyscraper hospital.
There are plenty of greenery in Clichy and spread over 38 hectares, divided mainly into 3 parks. Born in , the park Salengro forms a triangle of some 2, sqm arranged into pleasant promenades in alleys lined with stone and flowers and punctuated by a piece of water, now the refuge of goldfish.
