Wednesday after eight children ate the candy, according to a news release. Most of the children, between ages 6 and 8, had no complaints other than an upset stomach, said Chief Jerry Gonzales, a spokesperson for Lauderhill Fire and Rescue. Two of the eight children were immediately released to their parents. All six of the other children have since been released from the hospital, Juliano said in an update Thursday afternoon.
It remains unclear how the child obtained the candy, whether the child knew what it was and whether anyone will face criminal charges for the incident.
There are no charges pending, Lauderhill Police said Wednesday. Parys Thomas, a spokesperson for the police department, said Thursday afternoon that police are still investigating and there have been no updates.
The Boys and Girls Club statement said staff immediately contacted authorities and medical personnel, who arrived quickly. Stephan could not comment on whether the center assisted with the specific incident in Lauderhill. Until mid-August, the center had been seeing more cases of edible marijuana-related illnesses than in , but calls have reduced recently, from about 13 calls per week in June to about eight calls per week.
