A lack of water supply was the obstacle that genius Pierre-Paul Riquet overcame to construct the Canal du Midi in the 17th Century. Yet when we met Captain Julian Allsop and his crew on our luxury hotel barge, we were told that we would not be able to sail into the Canal du Midi because - ironically - there was too much water.
There was only one river to cross, the Herault, but it was in flood. Cosseted in our cosy cabins on the Anjodi the barge on which TV chef Rick Stein filmed his French Odyssey show , the delay didn't perturb us. A champagne welcome and an endless supply of fine wines may have had something to do with it There was only one other couple on our European Waterways voyage from Marseillan to Le Somail the Anjodi can sleep eight guests.
This meant there was oodles of space and hot water. By the third day, the sun was shining and water levels on the Herault had dropped, so we were able to enter the canal. The scenery of Languedoc-Roussillon is easy on the eye.
In spring, bursts of pink almond blossom fringe rolling vineyards. At our safety briefing, we were advised that if any crew shouted 'Duck!
When we reached our first mooring at sunset, egrets and storks mingled with grazing wild horses. That evening we also enjoyed Julian's pre-dinner wine talk, learning to taste through lips pouted like 'cul de poule' a chicken's rear end to you.
