On the afternoon of January 24th officers with the Des Moines Police Department responded to a residence in the block of East Tiffin Avenue to investigate a report of a wanted person at the home. Former Iowa cop accused of sending explicit photos to minor facing more charges. Preliminary evidence, including video recordings, show officers enter the home and announce their and a K9s presence multiple times, the DMPD said. After not receiving a response the officers entered the residence in search of Mitchell.
Seconds after a loud noise and movement could be heard inside the closet, which the DMPD says the officers believed was Mitchell firing at them. Mitchell was shot and transported to a Des Moines hospital where he later died. They remain on administrative assignment. According to DMPD, after the shooting a search warrant was executed at the home and no firearm was found.
The Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation is continuing the investigation into the shooting. More information will be released when made available.
