The two sides of the town are joined by this bridge which was built in the 14th century, on the site of an earlier Roman crossing. By the end of the 19th century it had become inadequate for the traffic it carried, and it was widened in , but the builders left the old bridge intact, and so we can see the original 14thC ogival arches forming the spandrels of the later bridge.
