Three black and gold diesel locomotives speed down the rails with horns blaring and bells clanging. Colorful boxcars and shiny, silver passenger cars trundle along behind the engines, destined for the next depot. As the train rounds the final bend, it comes to a stop. And the engineer β 6-year-old Caleb Allgeier β smiles as he puts down the remote control he used to race the model trains around the tracks. As the organization expands its model train layouts, longtime model railroaders say they hope younger train enthusiasts will join the club. With another part of their first-floor layout β as well as their second-floor layout β they're trying to recreate what the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad might have looked like in the 20th Century as it operated in the mountainous regions of Colorado. Allgeier, who with his father visited the museum on a whim, agrees. Their layouts are hand-made, and teaching children to build layouts helps them learn how use tools β and trains them to use their minds.
Ample opportunities to learn those skills are available now as club members work on their layouts, which span more than 5, square feet on each floor, Howell said.
