Guggenheim appeared in [, a full year before the foundation that bears his name was chartered, and three years before his museum opened. Under Thomas M. Messer, director of the museum from through , the Guggenheim earned a reputation for meticulously researched books documenting its major masterworks; indeed, Angelica Zander Rudenstine's two-volume The Guggenheim Museum Collection: Paintings and her Peggy Guggenheim Collection.
