Interstate 69 I , also known as the Iraq Afghanistan Veterans Memorial Highway [ 3 ] south of Indianapolis, in the US state of Indiana travels southwest to northeast, connecting all 3 of the state's largest cities, Evansville, Indianapolis, and Fort Wayne. The highway proceeds north to the state of Michigan , reaching its capital city, Lansing and beyond, and is planned to eventually proceed south to the state of Kentucky and beyond.
I begins in Southwestern Indiana at the interchange with U. Route 41 US 41 and Veterans Memorial Parkway in Evansville and crosses the state line traveling due northeast into Michigan northwest of the town of Fremont. I begins at an interchange with US 41 on the southern edge of Evansville.
The road continues northwest as Veterans Memorial Parkway, a four-lane divided highway that parallels the Ohio River to Downtown Evansville , where the parkway continues as Riverside Drive. From US 41, I briefly heads east, then gradually curves to the north around the southern and eastern city limits.
Between Evansville and Bloomington , I traverses the largely rural, open areas of Southwestern Indiana. Near the town of Elnora , I transitions from generally flat terrain to much more hilly, even at times rugged terrain with the highway cutting through several hills in Greene County. Just southwest of Bloomington, I has an interchange with SR 37 , at the latter's new truncation point.
From then on, the highway continues its journey northeastward, running around the western city limits of Bloomington and northeast to the city of Martinsville , where the highway runs along the south and eastern sides of the city. Continuing northeast, the highway gradually returns to more flat terrain before entering Indianapolis. The highway continues through the southwestern side of Indianapolis before merging into I , Indianapolis's outer beltway, at an interchange southwest of downtown.
