This was a movie about grief and how some people have a major problem with it. He was trying to relive what he and his lover shared so he uses him as a substitute to relive those moments like boating and hiking. He is hurting and in pain and it took the kind and understating Ernesto to help him recover and to go on with his life. Ernesto asks one of his friends how he would deal with the death of a loved, hint hint.
