Although these are not attributes that work in most social settings, they are non-factors in most gyms, where shutting out the outside world is the norm. Thus, when I found myself one morning in an unfamiliar gym near the dealership, I was in heaven.
I was a stranger and the other members avoided me as if I had open sores. Halfway through my workout, the gym owner arrived and promptly began picking up weights and re-organizing benches. As he moved through the weight stacks, he greeted everyone he saw.
Nothing elaborate, just a simple hello. I surmised that these must be regulars and turned back towards my workout. Undeterred, he deliberately passed my line of sight.
As he did, he smiled seemingly genuinely and said hello. I returned the pleasantry, feeling slightly happier and impressed with his little touch of professionalism. That impression grew exponentially a short while later when I received a call from a regular at the gym, my cousin. The owner approached him and asked if I was his brother. He had checked the guest log, noticed we had the same last name and wanted to find out what the relationship was.
