A series of hearings scheduled for later this month will determine whether the names of 28 alleged customers of a "sophisticated high-end brothel network" will become public. Prosecutors have indicated the list could include several high-profile individuals. The case began in November when federal investigators arrested three people accused of running the brothels out of a network of apartments in the Boston area and Virginia.
Names of the suspects were not released, pending a probable cause finding by the court. The 28 probable cause hearings are set for Jan. Court officials said that if probable cause is found, the complaints will be processed and will subsequently become available through the Cambridge District Court Clerk's Office. Han Lee, 41, of Cambridge, was identified in an affidavit as the leader and organizer of the alleged prostitution network.
Investigators believe she recruited women, maintained the website and business records used by the organization and maintained the brothel units both in Massachusetts and during regular trips to Virginia. Han Lee is also accused of enlisting the two co-defendants to rent apartments to be used as brothels. According to the affidavit, Han Lee also kept ledgers detailing daily activity at the brothels containing appointment dates, times and earnings of the women.
Investigators believe his tasks involved communicating directly with sex customers, transporting or otherwise assisting commercial sex workers and collecting proceeds from the apartments. At least one apartment being used in the scheme was registered in his name. Investigators allege that James Lee circulated millions of dollars through dozens of associated businesses.
