OER, or Open Educational Resources, are course materials that are freely accessible and that allow others to use, adapt, and redistribute them with no or limited restrictions. Twenty-five cohorts have been formed, bringing together teaching faculty from public and private academic institutions across the state of Louisiana. These faculty have been selected to develop a deployable OER course for one of twenty-five dual enrollment general education courses.
Together, the OER courses developed by the cohorts have the potential to reduce costs and improve outcomes for approximately 20, high school students and , total student enrollments statewide per academic year. Earlier in the year, Librarian Cohort Leaders were selected to work alongside teaching faculty throughout this process. Each cohort consists of faculty who were selected based on their teaching experience, interest in expanding access to dual enrollment, and their commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Cohorts will begin their work with a kickoff event scheduled in late May Over the summer months, they will develop skills around open education resources, open publishing, and course development, among other topics.
The cohorts will then spend the next year working on developing these general education courses. Completed courses will be implemented in a pilot phase in the fall of All twenty-five courses will continue to be taught and refined on campuses across the state in the spring of and beyond. LOUIS will work with leaders in secondary and post-secondary education, in the open education resource community, and through conference presentations to bring awareness to these freely accessible courses to ensure their continued development and use.
