When we think of sexual wellbeing, we might first think about the health of the physical body. We can think about our health in terms of sexually transmitted infections, health conditions we live with that might affect our ability to be sexual, or changes to our bodies over time. Even though these are no doubt important parts of our sexual wellbeing, there is so much more we should consider when thinking about our sexual lives and wellbeing. Sexual wellbeing is a state of physical, emotional, and social wellbeing relating to our sexuality and there are multitudes of ways we can look after it.
It is also important to note, that sexual wellbeing does not mean wellbeing in relation to only sex or sexual activity, it is also about feeling good and comfortable in your body, gender identity, sexuality, and relationships.
These positive feelings of comfort can be supported by information that is not shaming, stigmatising or fear provoking. This information should be supportive and celebrate our differences. It includes things like the fact that we all should have the right to choose how to have sex β whether is to have it with multiple partners, wait for somebody you wish to spend the rest of your life with, or never have sex at all.
How we feel in our bodies and in ourselves is important to our overall wellbeing. If you find yourself questioning your identity or sexuality, it can be helpful to talk to somebody β whether it is a trusted family member, friend, or a professional. You can also seek out further information online from organisations that provide information, stories, support groups, guidance and further support for all people questioning their sexuality, gender and more.
